I don’t speak Italian and so I definitely can’t read a menu written entirely in Italian, but that’s about the only thing I can say that was bad about this place. Well, almost. When I first entered Peasant, I was greeted by Captain Drunktard. The host was noticeably wasted and could barely stand. His attempt at helping my date with her coat was taken as an attempt at choking her as this drunken buffoon simply reached for her coat with no warning or description of his actions. I do speak drunktard very well so I interpreted for her and she happily gave him her coat. We sat in the high-ceiling main dining room with exposed bricks and awesome wood fire oven open kitchen. The place was really rustic and smelled amazing. My waiter was attentive and made excellent suggestions on wine for my table. He didn’t mind that the third part of my threesome was running late. When we were all comfortable our waiter translated every item on the menu and very eloquently described each dish and made recommendations. We shared burrata, which is an awesome Italian buffalo mozzarella cheese on the outside with mozzarella and cream on the inside, and I totally recommend it. The main courses were AMAZING. I ordered the roast suckling pig, which was cooked perfectly and tender, and the skin was crispy and incredibly flavorful. My dates had gnocchi with rabbit and cream sauce, which was also incredible, and the skate fish. That’s the best gnocchi I’ve ever had. The fish was surprisingly juicy and very very crisp. Nice juxtaposition on that one. They must have baked it and then thrown it into the broiler at the very end. I was super impressed with this dining establishment. If you can manage to get a table here I HIGHLY recommend it. Peasant is a place worth coming to New York for.
